Introduction: “Now after these things…” Ezra 7:1 occurred about 59 years after the last verse of Ezra chapter six and about 21 years after Ezra became queen of Persia. The return under Ezra occurred about 457BC. Ezra did not build a physical structure like the other men who led returns, but he reestablished the true worship in obedience to the law of Moses. By the time of Ezra, the only Old Testament prophet who had not yet prophesied was Malachi. Ezra’s return was the second of the three major returns:
- First return under Zerubbabel built the temple
- Second return under Ezra established true worship
- Third return under Nehemiah built the city walls
The major Persia kings during this period of time were as follows:

- THE PREPARATION OF EZRA (Ezra 7:1-10)

- There were the people
- There were priests
- But there were no Levites
- Note: Levites filled the middle position as ministers for the house of our God (Ezra 8:17). The work could not be done without them.
- Sent back to Babylon for the Levites (Ezra 8:16-17)
- Good Levites were brought to them (Ezra 8:18-19)
- A good number of Nethinims also came (Ezra 8:20)
- These were the hereditary servants of the temple. They did the menial work of the sanctuary for the Levites. Their name means those set apart.
- They were probably descendants of the Gibeonites (Joshua 9:27).
- THE TRIP TO JERUSALEM (Ezra 8:21-36)
- The Proclaiming of a Fast (Ezra 8:21-23)
- Asking for protection (Ezra 8:21)
- To afflict themselves before the Lord
- To seek of Him a right way
- Keeping their testimony (Ezra 8:22; Exodus 32:9-14)
- Ashamed to seek protection from the king

Conclusion: On one hand, we see the order and organization established by Ezra. But on the other hand, we see the power of God in this return because of their trust in Him and prayer to Him. We could learn much about doing the work of the Lord in this lesson. Find the will of the Lord. Make yourself right with Him. Prepare for the work. Then, do it with faith and determination.
