INTRODUCTION: The conquest of the Promised Land begins with the battle of Jericho. Everything up to now has been preparation. Now real war begins. God begins by assuring Joshua that He is with him and that He has a plan for taking Jericho.
- THE LORD APPEARS TO JOSHUA (Joshua 5:13-15)
- As a Man with a Sword in His Hand (Joshua 5:13)
- Joshuas confrontation with the man
- Joshua sees Him.
- Joshua questions Him.
- Note: This reminds us of a situation where Moses saw a bush burning and drew closer to see what the great site was. It was at that point that Moses was told of his calling to return to Egypt to deliver the Israelites.
- As the Captain of the Host of the Lord (Joshua 5:14-15)
- The man identifies Himself (Joshua 5:14a); certainly, a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ.
- He receives worship from Joshua (compare Revelation 19:10).
- He speaks to Joshua as the LORD (Joshua 6:2).
- The LORD is a man of war (Exodus 15:3).
- Joshua falls on his face (Joshua 5:14b).
- He worships Him.
- He submits to Him.
- What saith my lord unto his servant?
- Compare Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? (Acts 9:6).
- The Lord commands Joshua to remove his shoes (Joshua 5:15).
- Loose thy shoe.
- The same command was given to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:5).
- God is demonstrating that He is with Joshua as He was with Moses (Joshua 1:5).
- The place is holy.
- It was holy because God was there (see Genesis 28:16-19).
- It was holy because it was the promised land (Genesis 12:1; Genesis 13:14-17; Genesis 15:7, 18; Genesis 17:8; Exodus 6:4; Exodus 13:5; Deuteronomy 1:8; Joshua 1:2-4).
- THE LORD GIVES HIS PLAN OF ATTACK (Joshua 6:1-5)
- Jericho Besieged by the Israelites (Joshua 6:1)
- Jericho was shut up.
- None went out.
- None came in.
- This was done because of the children of Israel.

- Some were to bear the ark.
- Some were to go before the ark with seven trumpets of rams horns.
- Instructions for the seventh day (Joshua 6:4-5)
- The city is to be compassed seven times. This makes for a total of 13 times in seven days (Joshua 6:4).
- The priests are to blow the seven trumpets (Joshua 6:4-5).
- The priests were to make a long blast with the trumpet (Joshua 6:5).
- Consider another time where the trumpet is specifically said to be blown with a long sound or blast (Exodus 19:13, 19).

- The people (Joshua 6:7)
- To go along with the ark
- The armed men to go before the ark
- The Company Circles the City Once (Joshua 6:8-11).
- The march begins (Joshua 6:8-9).
- The priests go before the ark blowing the trumpets (Joshua 6:8).
- The armed men go before the priests with the trumpets (Joshua 6:9).
- The rereward came after the ark (Joshua 6:9).
- Rereward is another spelling for rearward and is related to rear guard. Ward is congruent to guard (Acts 12:10).
- The word rereward is found six times in scripture: Numbers 10:25; Joshua 6:9, 13; 1 Samuel 29:2; Isaiah 52:12; Isaiah 58:8.
- A rereward has many different functions.
- It protects from attack in the rear (Deuteronomy 25: 17-19).
- It enables an orderly retreat (2 Timothy 4:9-17).
- It plugs up holes in the line (2 Corinthians 2:10-11).
- It replaces weary frontline troops (Psalm 23:3; Isaiah 41:10; Galatians 6:9).
- It gives a push in the heat of the battle (Romans 8:31; 2 Corinthians 2:14).
- Note: According to Isaiah 52:12, the Lord is the Rereward of His people.
