Treating the Ladies with Purity (1 Timothy 5:1-2)

Introductory Thoughts

The church meetinghouse has historically been viewed as a spiritually safe haven. Unfortunately, the Devil has increasingly been able to turn this haven into a place of abuse by those with impure motives. It all began when “Christian” men allowed themselves to deal with ladies in ways that lead to impure thoughts, resulting in impure actions. In today’s passage, Paul warned Timothy about these dangers and provided wisdom on how to safely deal with these relationships. He told Timothy to treat the elder women as though they were his mother. Concerning the younger ladies, Paul told Timothy to treat them as he would his sister. Christian gentlemen naturally avoid improper thoughts toward their mothers and sisters. Paul was aware that such dangers within a body of believers would exist between men and women so he cautioned Timothy and the church how to behave appropriately.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): Paul wrote to Timothy about how to behave in the house of God. Most dedicated Christians have experienced the joy of extended families within the church. Christians are not just a family at home but are blessed with one at church too. Boys should always treat girls at church with respect. Ask Dad to go over a few rules with you (do not hit, hold open doors for them, etc.).
  • (For everyone):  What would be some wise steps to take to insure that you are pure in your dealings with the opposite gender? Do you consider how your words will be perceived before speaking to others?
  • If you are married, speak to your spouse about ways that you can ensure purity when dealing with those of the opposite gender. Resolve to be totally committed to only your spouse.

Prayer Thoughts

  • Ask the Lord to protect you from impure thoughts at church.
  • Ask the Lord for wisdom in dealing with the opposite gender.
