Holy and Without Blame Before Him (Ephesians 1:1-4)

Introductory Thoughts

There are two areas in which a man can be blameless. He can be blameless in his practice based upon his efforts to do right. Additionally, a believer can be blameless positionally, but this is completely based upon the finished work and righteousness of Christ. This second area of blamelessness is the subject of Ephesians 1:4 as is also the case in Colossians 1:22. In the context of that passage, it is clear this blamelessness comes only through the reconciliation of Christ (Colossians 1:21). This means that in Christ, believers bear no guilty responsibility for sins they have committed. Instead, believers are viewed and accepted in the righteousness of Christ (Ephesians 1:6).

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): Right now, in Gods sight, a saved person is without blame because Christ took our sin upon Him when He died and gave us His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). There is no other way to be blameless (Romans 10:1-5; Philippians 3:9).
  • (For everyone): What is the difference between a mans position and his practice? Why is it important for each believer to know where he stands both positionally and practically?
  • Name some righteous kings in the Bible. How did their authority affect the people? Name some wicked kings in the Bible. How did their authority affect the people?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Thank God for what He has done for you.
  • Ask God to help your practice match your position.
