He Hath Respect unto the Lowly (Psalm 138:6)

Introductory Thoughts

One does not have to read very far into the Bible before reading where God had respect unto one man while refusing to respect another (Genesis 4:4-5). Those who are careless students of the Bible might think the Bible contradicts itself when it states that the Lord is not a respecter of persons and also declares that He had respect unto certain individuals. It is very important that the Bible student consider that God does respect, but only when there is a cause for that respect. According to Psalm 138:6, the LORD hath “respect unto the lowly.” This truth is reiterated in Isaiah 66:2 where the Lord said, “to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): When we humble ourselves before God, we put aside our desires and do what He wants. God respects that (Proverbs 3:1, 4, 34b; Psalm 34:18; Psalm 51:17). He exalts an individual in due time (1 Peter 5:6; James 4:10). Gods own Son is our example (Philippians 2:5-11).
  • (For everyone): The Lord is not impressed with mans pride. How does Psalm 138:6 and Isaiah 66:2 indicate that humility yields respect from God? How is this truth the source of respect in Genesis 4:4-5?
  • Do you want the Lords respect? Are you willing to humble yourself before Him and tremble at His word? Why does this draw the Lords attention?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Thank God for the opportunity to have His attention.
  • Ask God to help you humble yourself before Him.
