The children of Israel had an important decision to make: whether to obey the Lord or unwisely refuse to obey Him. The Lord assured His children that their obedience would pay off with fruitful dividends. He promised to bless their obedience and curse their disobedience. The Bible clearly lists the blessings of obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Though the blessings of obedience can vary from one person to the next, obedience always yields God's blessing. For instance, Abraham was told that all nations would be blessed in his seed because he obeyed the voice of the Lord (Genesis 22:18). Isaiah told the Israelites that, if they would obey, they would eat the good of the land (Isaiah 1:19). Jeremiah told his audience that their obedience would cause it to be well with their soul and that their souls would live (Jeremiah 38:20). Blessings received from obedience may vary, but the blessings of obedience are well worth any temporary fleshly sacrifice.
Diligent Bible study is commanded of God. However, far too many Christians simply fail to comprehend the depths and riches of God's words. For instance, society has distorted the meaning of obey by limiting obedience solely to following a set of commands. Although obedience certainly does involve following the rules, the Bible indicates a much broader application. Today's passage sheds light on obedience and the depth of its meaning. The Bible says that Israel “would not hear them, nor do them” (that is, hear or do the commandments of God). With this context, it is easy to understand that the Bible defines disobedience as the refusal to hear and do the commandments of the Lord. Other similar passages teach this same truth (1 Samuel 15:22; Proverbs 5:13; Jeremiah 17:23). Obedience is twofold: first, the individual must have an attentive ear, and second, he must act by faith.
The Bible proclaims that creation was not some type of random accident. Though proponents of the evolutionary theory vehemently disagree, the Bible indicates that creation involved wisdom and great carefulness by a benevolent Creator. Even scientific evidence reveals the truth of order in our world and the universe. For instance, the sun and the moon work perfectly together. The solar system runs its course without catastrophic misadventures. The heavens provide water for the earth and the earth cycles it back to the heavens. This system, far from haphazard, works together in harmony. What did the Lord do in order to ensure this type of perfection? According to today’s passage, the Lord “stretched out the heavens by his discretion.” To claim otherwise is to depict the Bible as false and God as a liar. God wants His people to use discretion in making decisions and clearly reveals that decisions made with discretion yield great benefits for those involved..
